Carpenter Ant Pest Control in San Jose

How to Identify Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants often make their homes in and around your property. Being able to identify carpenter ants can help prevent them from wreaking havoc on your home. Here are a few identifying factors:

  • Physical Appearance: Carpenter ants are usually a dark brown or black color, though they have also been known to have a dark red complexion. They are approximately 0.25 to 0.5 inches in size, making them one of the largest ants in North America. Another distinguishing factor is their large mandibles, which help them work and carry different types of food and supplies to the colony.
  • Effects of Work: Carpenter ants are appropriately named for because they cut wood, form nesting galleries inside of wood, and spend countless hours building nests. If these pesky ants have invaded, you may notice wood shavings accompanied by crumbs of food and/or other dead ants. These are all signs of a carpenter ant’s work.
  • Audio Clues: When a carpenter ant colony is nearby and all other sounds are muted, you should be able to hear a faint swishing or rustling sound. This is the sound of ants cutting through the wood in your home.
